M38

Discovered by Le Gentil in 1749, M38 is perhaps the least impressive of the three Messier clusters in Auriga, but still an exciting object. At magnitude 6.4 and 21' across it is best viewed at low power. The total stellar population is in excess of 100, the brightest being magnitude 9.5. Look for the small nearby cluster NGC 1907 at the right edge in the above picture.
